Your Guide to Local Events for Summer 2021/22
With warmer weather well and truly upon us, the excitement for Summer at Anchoridge continues to build. With plenty of events happening around Armstrong Creek, Greater Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula, check out the community events that are happening all Summer long near you.
Markets
Whenever the sun is out so are the stallholders! For seasonal, fresh summer produce, we suggest heading to one of the farmers markets in Bellarine, North Bellarine or South Geelong. Shop before pausing for Devonshire tea at Barwon Heads Market or find artisan and gourmet goods at the Portarlington Parks Hall Market. Support locals by popping into the summer markets by Rotary Ocean Grove or any of the community-driven fundraising markets at Queenscliff, Portarlington or Drysdale. Alternatively, at Belmont Market you’ll uncover treasures from an offering that includes a little bit of everything.
Health & Fitness
Isn’t it so much easier to get your daily 10,000 steps in when the sun is out? Immerse yourself in iconic sporting events like Rip to River, the Festival of Sails or the Bay Cycling Classic. Combine fun and fitness at the Dawnbuster Fun Run on New Year’s Eve or the Bellarine Sunset Run (and reward yourself with a Flying Brick cider or two afterwards). For a real challenge, why not start training for the Barwon Heads Triathlon, Jim Wall Iron Race or Ironman 70.3?
Art & Culture
There really is something for everyone to discover this season. Book a date night to catch an interesting flick at the North Bellarine Film Festival. See how innovative people are contributing their talents and efforts to the neighbourhood at the Humans in Geelong Expo or the Creative Geelong May’d Festival – they’re free! Experience the weird, wild and curious as Melbourne Fringe Festival takes over Geelong Arts Centre. Even the littlest art critics are catered for; take a toddler to Gallery Tots for creative play and stories.
Music
Live music: we’ve all missed it. Make up for it by packing your sunny days with good sounds no matter your genre preferences. From folk to baroque, the Geelong Botanical Gardens have classical music covered with concerts by Trio Oceanique and Evergreen Ensemble. They’re also hosting a series of Jazz Soirees – don’t forget to BYO picnic. If you find yourself wandering around Little Malop Central this December, don’t be surprised if you find yourself being serenaded on the street. A range of free, pop-up performances are scheduled there. If your tastes lean more towards the electronic and something to dance to these sunset sessions will likely suit you. Otherwise, step back in time at a family-friendly 70s music festival filled with rock, pop and disco. Retro outfits are encouraged!
Food & Drink
Wine lovers should mark their calendars for Toast to the Coast in February. Held at a pier, this popular, waterfront festival features around 20 regional winemakers so you can easily sip over 80 wines in just one spot. If hoppy brews are more your style, the Great Australian Beer Festival returns in January. Start 2022 off right by sampling craft and boutique beers alongside BBQ, food trucks and a live soundtrack supplied by Art vs Science and The Badloves.
