The growth of Greater Geelong: Why life at Anchoridge is looking more promising than ever

As more and more people continue to seek a seachange away from the city, Greater Geelong continues to grow at an exponential rate. And with billions of dollars set to be spent on upgrading roads, public transport, tourism and community infrastructure, read on to discover why life at Anchoridge is looking more promising than ever.

The opening of the Spirit of Tasmania Quay

From October 2022, Greater Geelong will be the new home of the Spirit of Tasmania.

The Spirit of Tasmania Quay, formerly Corio Quay, will bring a brand new, purposefully designed terminal to our city.

Set to open on October 23rd, the precinct, worth over $135 million, will span 12 hectares.

Featuring a passenger terminal, a passenger vehicle area, security facilities, public amenities, food and beverage outlets as well as a children's play area, the precinct is set to provide a more comfortable journey for travellers.

With an estimated 450,000 passengers per year, the City of Greater Geelong predicts that the relocation of the Spirit of Tasmania to Corio Quay alone will increase tourism expenditure in the city by $57.3 million by 2029-30.

The Armstrong Creek Library

With Armstrong Creek officially lauded as Victoria’s fastest growing continuous growth corridor, Anchoridge residents can look forward to world-class amenities on their doorstep, including the future Armstrong Creek Town Centre Library and Community Hub.

Set to become the cornerstone of the area, this project marks the first major civic and social infrastructure project in the region.

The $18.5 million triple-storey precinct, set to be complete by early 2024, will provide a safe and comfortable environment for residents to learn, grow and build important social connections.

With dedicated spaces for children's learning and youth programs, multi-purpose meeting spaces, creative spaces and bookable co-working facilities, there's no doubt that the precinct will shape the future of our exciting community.

Best of all, it's only 10 minutes from Anchoridge!

The 2026 Commonwealth Games

In more exciting news for our region, Geelong will form one of the major regional hubs for the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The city is set to host all aquatics events, paralympic swimming, beach volleyball, hockey, gymnastics and more!

Aside from global exposure, the games are also expected to contribute over $3 billion to Victoria’s economy, creating a combined 7,400 jobs across the next four years.

With new and major upgrades set to be used on sporting infrastructure, transport and major facilities, the games are set to transform regional Victoria into a major events hub and provide important, long-term benefits to the existing community.

Victoria's Big Build

As the largest continual growth area in Victoria, Armstrong Creek is currently receiving major infrastructural upgrades in a bid to accommodate the booming population.

With more and more Melburnians switching the city lights for the peaceful lifestyle of the Surf Coast, the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds railway duplication is set to deliver more frequent and reliable train services between Geelong and Melbourne.

These works will enable five services per hour during peak travel times, with plans to remove dangerous level crossings, including one on the Surf Coast Highway.

The project will also see improved facilities at Marshall, Waurn Ponds and South Geelong stations, making the commuting experience a lot more comfortable.

In a bid to ease congestion in the area, the Victorian Government has also commenced works on Barwon Heads Road, with the upgrades set to improve road safety and traffic flow within the area.

Works include the duplication of 4km of road between Settlement Road and Reserve Road, the construction of a bridge over the railway line at Marshall Station to replace the current level crossing, new traffic lights, upgraded intersections and more.
